What we need before race day
Address or directions where the race is to be held.
Contact information of person responsible for the race.
A cell phone number is helpful.
What we need on race day:
Help pushing in the track. It's on wheels.
Table for Computer & Projector.
Church rolling white-board or chalkboard (The backside makes a great screen for the projector)
Race Day Items:
Set up takes about 45 minutes including entering names into the computer. Once entered the
racing can begin.
We'll be there the entire time. In fact we like to host the race, acting as race official, comedian,
and coordinator, but you are always welcome to do whatever you feel most comfortable. After opening
exercises turn the event over to us and enjoy the time with your boys!
After racing is complete I'll turn the time back to you to announce the winners. Immediately after
the final heat we'll give you the results and at the same time you read the results the computer can show
them on the board.
We have the following items: (We set all this stuff up)
Complete Track with digital timer, LED displays, electronic gate release & accessories
Computer with race management software
Printer
Computer Projector
Very accurate digital scale
Microphone with cords
Church sound system interface box
Traffic cones with rope. (Only if wanted)
Tape to keep cords down
Check list of Items the Pack may want to provide:
Trophies & Awards
Certificates
Decorations - Use the pack council to bring and set up decorations, awards, treats, etc.
Treats or food
Other Tidbits
We have done over 250 races and no one has cried or argued. There's simply nothing to cry
over or argue about. The scoring is fair, unbiased, and it's just fun.
Free-for-alls before and after are encouraged, with parental and leader permission.
It is recommended pre-assigning a leader to check in cars and create a list of participants.
Room layout seems to work best if the track runs down the center with a few rows of chairs on
either side.
Younger children are curious about the track, that's just fine. We ask parents to watch them so
they don't get hurt.
It's just for fun and it's just Pine Wood Derby. If someone cheats or enters an illegal car, they
have to live with the guilt. It's more important that they participate (attend scouts) than get sent away.
Besides most of the time the kids don't know it's wrong and items that are illegal can be quickly
remedied before the racing begins. Getting uptight just makes things worse. If another parent takes
issue with it, let me talk to them. We want everyone to have a great time!
